The Tanker Sergo
Zakariadze grounded at the entrance to San Juan Harbor in Puerto Rico
a week before I
started working there.
I can remember looking out the airplane
window on
approach and seeing this site.
It remained grounded there for four whole
months. One sailor was injured in the operation of raising it.

The Normandie was a French ocean liner that caught fire
and capsized in
it's berth in
New York City in 1942. These photos show the importance of
de-watering after a fire.

The
Exxon
Valdez ran aground in Prince William Sound, Alaska in March 1989,
spilling about 11 million gallons of crude. Despite being
only 53rd on the list of "most oil spilled", it was the spill that set the ball
rolling for much of the regulations that are in place today
